Oh dear me...I think I am suffering from the writer's block today, (not that I am a writer in that sense)! So, what do I do? I do the next best thing, or rather the best thing, is to extract a wonderful thought from 'The world's best-selling book' by Paul Arden, my current best buddy. How wrong can one go? Ha ha ha.I think of this thought, as quite controversial. Not many people dare think like Paul Arden, here. It is indeed a brave concept. Well...thought-provoking enough? What do you think?
Here goes:
Nearly everybody tries to win awards.
Awards create glamour and glamour creates income.
But beware.
Awards are judged in committee by consensus of what is known.
In other words, what is in fashion.
But originality can’t be fashionable, because it hasn’t as yet had the approval of the committee. Do not try to follow fashion.
Be true to your subject and you will be far more likely to create something that is timeless.
That’s where the true art lies.
'AWARDS ARE MERELY BADGES OF MEDIOCRITY' Charles Ives
Cheers,
Ruby.

My dearest K Ruby,
An interesting topic you have here. I guess we can look at it from many angles. Award can be a form of motivation, especially if it can quantified and within a person's ability to achieve(i.e. The highest performing sales etc).
Hi Seen_er,
Lovely to see a your comment. I decided to leave this entry open, so that we can share other points of view.
I do believe at the end of the day there are varied ways to look at things. There are varied solutions to any single problem and all could still be correct given the context the person interprets it.
In this case, as you said an award can be a form of motivation for something quatifiable eg 'The highest performing sales', yes, agreed, spot on here. Absolutely perceptive and sharp of you, Seen-er. Good morning.
Cheers,
Ruby.
Ruby sayang,
It is just like you to pick a controversial subject. You are yourself quite different when it comes to the way you think, I have noticed. That's what makes you tick dear and on that note we are lucky to have you on TKC blog. We get endless fun.
I can't agree more that, 'AWARDS ARE MERELY BADGES OF MEDIOCRITY'. I say this when it comes to unquantifiable items like fashion design, and other areas of design I guess.
My 2 sen.
K Anne.
K Ruby, tapi kan, it's only human to be greedy and seek recognition.
Some even say bloggers are just narcisist in anohter name.
patutla we not celebrity blogger like kenny sia or xiaxue...
we aren't narcisist enough!
K Ruby dear,
I agree with seen_er that award can be some sort of motivation.
Yes, with a positive mind and attitude, it can be.
But stupe has a point too.
Being human, we usually want recognition and attention.
Never mind lah we aren't celebrity bloggers, kan K Ruby?
Less attention's sometime for the better.
Wassalam.
p/s: I'm definitely up for the nasi kerabu challenge! Wah, I was only away for a day and a whopping 25 comments already in the previous entry! Do tell me when you drop by Kelate, I'll (ask my mom to) cook. He he he.
Stupe,
Yes, I agree.. its our nature to want recognition. Or else, no one would make a gigantic mock cheque whenever they present a donation to those charitable organization :)
p/s OPA... SPM '92 ke ?
Fizzy,
Nasi kerabu tu, the budu make sure extra ye? :) Make sure ada mek bak and akok... so that we can introduce the delicacies of Cik Siti Wan Kembang to our dearest K Ruby :)
I copy here a comment from Dato Dr Norraesah Mohamad:
Dear Ruby,
My thoughts are not provoked coz I don't know what this P.Arden said. Havent got around to reading his
book. Too busy just trying to think how to live my life more meaningfully and make it meaningful for others
too.
Kak Chah.
Hi K Anne,
Wow! I feel so flattered with what you said here. Thanks anyway.
It is true, with unquatifiable areas of design and creative ideas, as I have shared with the gang on the e-Group, one needs to have a free mind to go beyond borders and boundaries of social norms to achieve timeless and original creations.
Hiya Stupe,
Ha ha ha! Eh, kita ni social bloggers. In time Stupe-rstar, we will get there, I promise ya!!!
*smile with that look of great belief in oneself and other co-social bloggers*
Fizzy babeh,
There are so many ways to look at things. Seen-er is right, Stupe is right and you are right.
Celebrity bloggers..hmm..subjective.
Nasi kerabu...aah...a nice subject indeed. Your mom will cook...aduuuh, TER-amat droool, babeh!! Can't wait. And yeah the minute you turned your back yesterday we all somehow became chatty. It was most fun!!
Seen_er dear,
Eh! Kenal Stupe-rstar?? Stupe ya ke spm 92?
Wow! So sweet of you Seen-er, to introduce the delicacies of Cik Siti Wan Kembang to me. Can't wait to taste mek bak and akok. Duh! Apa benda tu agak nya...??
Heyy, nice chatting.
Hi K Chah,
Yo! Thanks so much sebab sudi jengok ke sini.
Hmm...Paul Arden wrote this wonderful handbook. Here's a review: Just as Sun Tzu's Art of War is read as a lesson in business strategy rather than fighting in a military sense, or Machiavelli's The Prince is written about goverment but used as a guide to management, so this book uses the creative processes of good advertising as a metaphor for business practice.
You said, 'Too busy just trying to think how to live my life more meaningfully and make it meaningful for others'...aah, yes, with all your though-provoking and motivating talks everywhere (such as the one at Hilton recently), I think you do help expand our mind and thus make a difference and meaningful for others. Thanks K Chah.
Dear Ruby,
I agree with this entry. It is best to do our best for the love of the job or project. Wow! But it is not easy right?
Salmah.
K Ruby,
Check out my blog if you wanna see how akok looks like. =)
seen_er - nola, SPM 93.
:)
i'm a year younger than you.
:)
K Ruby - yeah STUPE-rstar, it's STUPEndous first before star.
:)
My dearest K Ruby,
Now that you have seen the akok, the next thing would be to get Fizzy to arrange it for us, kan ? :))
Stupe,
So you ni batch dgn Romizan and Shahrizal? They were my juniors during my primary school days... those were the simpler days... no stress, no mortgage, no student loan... *sigh*
Hi Salmah,
'Doing our best' is rather niche these days Salmah. But if one can genuinely, one gets fulfillment and great outcome. Thanks for dropping by.
Fizzy dear,
I know you menat so well posting all those gorgeous pix on akok and the others, but I was tortured this afternoon. Drooling as Kelantan is s-o-o-o far my love. Where can I get some akok in KL? Anyone knows? I can't wait to sink my teeth in one, perhaps truthfully, 3 pieces..he he. But, thanks dear. Such sweet gesture and I do appreciste it.
Hi Stupe,
Boy your entries macam lightning cepat nya. Tak terkejar!! Well done. Stupendous indeed...ha ha ha.
Hi Seen_er,
Now that I have seen akok, I wanna taste it tomorrow...he he. Would you know where in KL, I could get some akok? *senyum but menyorok merana*
Boy you know Stupe's friends. Phhhewar! Amazing. Who are you Seen_er? Seram...
Thanks Seen_er for being around us.
Dearest K.Ruby,
I am one with the award and recognition thing.Actually it is basic survival instint.
Love you,
Meeky
My dearest K Ruby,
Akok is easily available in KL nowadays, esp at pasar malam (enterprising kelantanse at its best) such as the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on saturday or the one in Taman Tun on sunday. Not really sure if Hatini's restaurant st Section 10 Shah Alam has but (but they do serve a wicked gulai kawah, though I bet Fizzy will say it's nothin' like the real thang!).
Who am i ? :) Heheheh... Jak Li should know :)
Hi Meeky,
Good on ya. Yeah! Basic instinct survival, after many challenges and exposure even that too get rather sophisticated or rather goes on to a higher plane. Thanks for visiting dear.
Hi Seen_er,
You are so lovely as to make effort for me to get all these info. Not areas I hit too often but will bear in mind should I pass through. Gulai kawah...gee I'm lost here. But will get there someday.
Heyy...by any chance you're coming to our inter alumni bowling on Sunday 6th Aug? Mckk sending some teams. You wanna introduce yourself to us at last? *wink*
Hey nice chatting with you. What??? Jak Li knows you? I'll ask him. He he.
My Dear K Ruby,
I meant well, indeed. But I know you'll be tortured just by looking at those pix.
He he he.
I think Kelantan delicacies are not that rare in KL.
You can find them almost everywhere.
(Tah² KLCC's Picnic ada jual akok tak?)
Oh wait, I just remembered.
There's this small stall in Kg Baru.
You can't miss it I think coz it's by the roadside and it has atap nipah. Very traditional..
I can't recall the name of the stall, but it sells a lot of Kelantan kuehs.
Just to name a few, lompat tikam, sira pisang, piyana, pulut panggang, cucur (not jemput²) etc.
So,Good luck in "akok-hunting"!! :)
Aiyo, very mysterious la Mr seen_er.
Torturing us 'budak² busy body'.
LOL
Fizzy babeh,
I know you meant well...but am still tortured...ha ha ha.
Will check out Kelantan Delights at KLCC, easiest place for me. But taken note of stalls mentioned, oh thanks for effort dear. Real lovely of you.
Seen_er, yup mysterious indeed...but will be un-veiled. Nobody gets passed us easily...watch Seen_er...he he he.
